First, a little reminder that Winter Solstice, that magical moment when days start becoming longer is, in fact, today! (According to most calendars, that is. Some will say it’s tomorrow, just to be totally accurate.) So we can look forward to squeaking out a little more daylight, starting today, even if the temperature continues to fluctuate.

Acupuncture Meridians

And since it’s the first day of Winter I would like to mention that in acupuncture there are certain meridians of energy that correspond with the “energetic” of the seasons. There are meridians that have to do with building and storing energy, much as nature does at this time of year.

And every point on every meridian has a name as well as a function. So today, I would like to introduce you to a few of these points and tell you what they do.

Greater Mountain Stream can be found on the inside of the ankle bone. If you put your finger on the tallest part of the bone, then let it fall over the bone and over the little band of flesh or muscle next to the bone, you might land in a little hole of sorts. That’s where we find the point. It’s great for building up energy when we are tired from just about anything. It might feel good to massage it.

Great Bell is a wonderful point also found on the inside of the ankle, just about a half inch below Greater Stream. It’s a good point to lift one’s spirits, which might be useful for folks suffering from winter blues. It can also be used for low back pain, which often accompanies fatigue and overwork.

Another great point, located beside the belly button is called Vitals Correspondence. (Different schools will have slightly different names.) From the beginning of life, we receive nourishment from our mother via the umbilicus, and this point continues to be a good source for ongoing nourishment, energy building and calming.

Wishing you all the best,
