Let’s discuss one more genre of health-centric smartphone apps — calorie counters! Well, that name might be a little misleading because the newest apps offer far more than simply counting calories.

First of all, why is this important?

According to acupuncture principles and many other branches of modern health care, diet and nutrition form the basic cornerstone of wellbeing.

AND, with our busy lifestyles and so many food options, it’s easy to loose track of what we are eating and how our choices might affect things like our weight, energy level, mood, sleeping habits and more.

So, enter technology — handy, free, comprehensive, informative, non-judgmental, and robotically honest.

I went through multiple apps on my phone to see what features they offered. I found things including barcode scanners, a searchable list of common grocery items to peruse before purchasing, nutritional info on popular restaurant items, nutritional analysis of common foods, the ability to sort food by calorie content including protein, fats, carbs, micro-elements and recommended dietary allowances. You can keep track of weight and progress towards goals, sync with your Fitbit to coordinate exercise with diet, keep track of water intake and enjoy exercise routines designed to do at home or away. Some let you set mealtime reminders if you have a tendency to burn through the day without any thought of nourishment.

Many apps offer avenues of social support. It is so important to be able to connect with a like-minded community for inspiration and encouragement.

Here are some excerpted comments from happy app users

This app is not only a pal, but my conscience. It helps me stay aware of what I put in my mouth every day. It helps me get back on track if I start gaining.

It helps to hold yourself accountable.

I am always on the go and I can easily use this to track my day. The exercises are easy to follow and helpful. I can now track my sodium intake, carbs, protein and more.

I keep track of my consistency. I recommend this to everyone, no matter what your goals are.

And next week we move on to mindful eating.

Wishing you all the best,
